How to
Become a Trained Boy Scout Leader
The Scouts in your unit deserve the best possible program you can provide them.
Adult Leader Training courses provide you with the information you need to be an
effective leader. Following are the steps that will allow you to be a “Trained”
leader.
Step 1: Fast Start Training
Fast Start training is the first step for any new volunteer and is to be taken
immediately after a new leader registers. Fast Start is a self-paced web-based
course. You will find links to Web training at
http://www.scouting.org. There are
no fees for the online courses.
Step 2: New Leader Essentials
New Leader Essentials is an introductory session that highlights the values,
aims, history, funding, and methods of Scouting. Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity
Scout, and Venturing leaders all take the same course. It is required for
all registered leaders. Leaders who have already completed Step 3 are
still required to complete this step to be considered trained. The course
duration is 1 ½ hours. To register by phone call the Marion Scout Store.
There is a minimal fee for this course.
Step 3: Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Specific Training
These training courses provide the specialized knowledge a new leader needs to
assume a leadership role. Each course is designed for a specific leadership
position. The duration is 6 hours for this course. To register by
phone call the Marion Scout Store. There is a minimal fee for this course.
Step 4: Introduction to Outdoor Skills Training
This is an outdoors Scout Craft skills course that is only required for direct
contact leaders in Boy Scout Troops including Scoutmasters and Assistant
Scoutmasters. Webelos Den Leaders are also recommended to take this course.
Venturing leaders are welcome to attend but this training is not required for
them to be considered trained. To register by phone call the Marion Scout Store.
