How to Become a Trained Boy Scout Leader

The Scouts in your unit deserve the best possible program you can provide them. Adult Leader Training courses provide you with the information you need to be an effective leader. Following are the steps that will allow you to be a “Trained” leader.

Step 1: Fast Start Training

Fast Start training is the first step for any new volunteer and is to be taken immediately after a new leader registers. Fast Start is a self-paced web-based course.  You will find links to Web training at http://www.scouting.org.  There are no fees for the online courses.

Step 2: New Leader Essentials

New Leader Essentials is an introductory session that highlights the values, aims, history, funding, and methods of Scouting. Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, and Venturing leaders all take the same course.  It is required for all registered leaders.  Leaders who have already completed Step 3 are still required to complete this step to be considered trained.  The course duration is 1 ½ hours. To register by phone call the Marion Scout Store.  There is a minimal fee for this course.

Step 3: Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Specific Training

These training courses provide the specialized knowledge a new leader needs to assume a leadership role. Each course is designed for a specific leadership position.  The duration is 6 hours for this course.  To register by phone call the Marion Scout Store.  There is a minimal fee for this course.

Step 4: Introduction to Outdoor Skills Training

This is an outdoors Scout Craft skills course that is only required for direct contact leaders in Boy Scout Troops including Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters. Webelos Den Leaders are also recommended to take this course. Venturing leaders are welcome to attend but this training is not required for them to be considered trained. To register by phone call the Marion Scout Store. There is a minimal fee for this course.
