2009 District Recognition Dinner

With over eighty scouters and their family members in attendance, the District Recognition Dinner was held to share thanks for all those who were committed to giving of themselves to scouting as well as those recognizing those youth who have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the prior year. 

The Harding Area District recently held their annual recognition dinner at the Guthery Community Room on the Marion campus of The Ohio State University. Each year the district holds the dinner to recognize the outstanding leaders and the Eagle Scouts from the previous year.

The dinner was a potluck with 84 in attendance, including 8 of the 19 Eagle Scouts from the Eagle class of 2008. Attending the dinner was also Scout Executive of the Heart of Ohio Council Alex Tymes and Harding Area District Executive Peter Fenimore.

The evening was emceed by District Commissioner Eric Bush and began with a flag ceremony by the Eagle Scouts and an invocation by Mike Watson of Troop 50.

Tyms and Fenimore announced the unit recognitions of units who were Quality Centennial units and those who held Friends of Scouting presentations. The Harding Area District received a Quality District Award.

Nathan Sayers of Pack 90 received his Woodbadge beads. And Marlene Malone recognized Scouters who completed training awards.

Eagle Scouts in attendance were: Christopher Armstrong (Troop 777), John Finnegan (Troop 50), Kyle Grossman (Troop 56), Jacob Hartschuh (Troop 777), Keith Jackson (Troop 23), Phillip Mattix (Troop 26), Jared Moore (Troop 57), and Keith Richardson (Troop 106).

Leaders recognized for the Harding Area District Award for outstanding leaders were:

Marsha Geckle (Pack 26), Mike Gale (Troop 30), Kimberly Abrams (Pack 33), Jackie Eizensmits (District/Pack 50), Lisa Camm (Troop 50), Charles Gilpin (Troop 86), Nathan Sayers (Pack 90), Lori Skaggs (Troop 101) and Joseph Gubernath (Post 117).

Receiving "year" awards were: Mike Abrams of Pack 33, Cubmaster of the Year; Terry Angel of Troop 30, Scoutmaster of the Year; Marlene Malone of the Harding Area District, Volunteer of the Year; Eric Bush of the Harding Area District, Commissioner of the Year; and Christy Utley of Post 104, Explorer Advisor of the Year.

The District Award of Merit is the highest award that can be bestowed upon on district volunteer and recognizing their exemplary service to their district. This year the recipients were Judge William Finnegan and Jon Sisler.

The Silver Beaver Award goes another step further and recognizes Scouters for many years of service and dedication to their Council. This award which will be given out at the Heart of Ohio Council dinner in April, but was recognized locally, went to Mike Watson of Troop 50.

The dinner was and evening of recognition and fellowship and a gathering of those who strongly support the Scouting movement. Alex Tymes shared his thoughts at the District Dinner. Terry Angel received the Scoutmaster of the Year Award. The potluck event was successful.
Marlene Malone received the Trainer of the Year Award Mike Watson was recognized as Silver Beaver Award recipient. Eric Bush was awarded the Commissioner of the Year.

Eagle Scouts were recognized for their achievement of the highest rank in scouting. Mike and Kim Abrams were recognized for there service to scouting.
